Healthline Media does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Sensory integration therapy is used to improve symptoms of sensory integration dysfunction. If you think your child may be hyperactive, talk with their doctor about possible ADHD testing. Getting a clear diagnosis is essential to ensure that your child is receiving the right support.
As we begin to learn more about how women experience autism, hopefully, it will be easier for girls and women to be correctly diagnosed as we move to a more encompassing definition of what autism is. By age two, non-autistic children will imitate your words and actions. By seven months, non-autistic children are able to laugh and make squealing sounds. Keep in mind during these difficult times that most children with ASD will make significant progress in overall function. Some children with ASD can do exceptionally well and may even remain in a regular education classroom. Many will have meaningful relationships with family and peers and achieve a good level of independence as adults.

Conditions correlated or comorbid to autism
It can be a helpful starting point in understanding the basics of autism. The definition does not completely fit everybody—every autistic person is different! Some autistic people may have problems with sensory processing, while others don’t. Some autistic people communicate nonverbally or with AAC, while others communicate verbally . If you know an autistic person who does not fit all the diagnostic criteria, don’t assume that they’re lying or “faking it”—autism is a spectrum disorder, so not everyone has every piece of it.
Talk to a doctor or specialist about pursuing a diagnosis. A general doctor may be willing to do an assessment, or they might want to get a specialist. Talking to a doctor is important, because self-diagnosis can be wrong, and you could end up missing out on the right support for you or your loved one. Introverts may be uncomfortable socializing in large groups or for a long time. Physical pain can make children unhappy, and they may be irritable, disruptive, or withdrawn. They may seem “unresponsive” when they actually just can’t hear something.Apraxia and dyspraxia can make it harder to use motor skills, and can affect speech.
Some children with autism have difficulty forming words into sentences, or repeat exactly what they hear — a condition called echolalia. Because they can’t communicate what they want, sometimes autistic children scream or cry out of frustration. The requirement for ‘precise behavioural criteria’ which epidemiological studies demanded encouraged new perspectives and descriptions of autism. Because this concept had been so central to general developmental psychology, its re-formation within the field of psychiatric epidemiology led new researchers to reconceptualize the central issues of that science. However, Lotter and colleagues reframed the topic of a child’s developing abilities to relate to others as purely a function of her or his behaviour. This model differed widely from those based on theoretical descriptions of a child’s imagined relationships to others such as in the work of Klein, Isaacs and Anthony.
Talk to your doctor before trying something different, like a special diet. There’s no hard evidence that special diets help children with ASD.
